The Flight Response

For the people who can't sit still, and feel guilty when they try.

You took the quiz, and it told you your nervous system leads with flight. Maybe you read that and thought, that can't be right, I never go anywhere. Maybe your calendar has no empty space left in it, you pick up your phone before you've decided to, sitting still feels like waiting for something bad to happen, and when you do rest, you feel guilty and tell yourself you're being lazy. Flight isn't only leaving a room. Most of the time it's staying busy. If you've ever been praised for how much you get done and privately known it was a way of not stopping, this course was written for you.

What you walk away with

By the end of the five weeks, this is what the practices build toward. How much of it you notice tends to follow how often you did them, and any amount counts:

  • You start to notice the urge to get up, get busy, or reach for your phone as it starts, in your legs, your chest, or your hands, which gives you a moment to choose what happens next.
  • You've practiced stopping for one minute a day with nothing in your hands, so sitting still starts to feel less like waiting for something bad to happen, and rest starts to come with less guilt.
  • You've practiced staying one more minute when the urge to leave comes up, knowing you can leave at any point, and you've practiced the first sentence of a conversation you've been avoiding, out loud, alone first and then with a safe person if you have one.
  • You start to have stretches of calm you didn't have to earn by finishing everything first, and most weeks you leave one space in your calendar empty on purpose.

No promises about how fast, and nothing here needs to be forced. The practices take a minute or two, none of them asks you to sit still for long, and they can add up.

This isn't a flaw you're fixing

Flight isn't flakiness, and it isn't a lack of discipline. It's a trauma response, one your body chose because somewhere, at some point, staying still wasn't safe. Your body learned that the safest thing was to keep moving, keep busy, and always know how you'd get out, and it has been getting away ever since, including from things you actually want. That was the right call at the time. The problem is that a body can keep moving and avoiding long after the situation it was escaping has ended. If the situation you're in isn't safe yet, that urge to leave is still protecting you, and nothing in this course asks you to stay anywhere that isn't safe.

You are not broken. You are patterned. And patterns can change.

What the five weeks hold

Awareness in Week 1: what the flight response is, where it usually comes from, and how it shows up now as busyness, perfectionism, and planning. Regulation in Weeks 2 and 3: why sitting still makes the anxiety go up, how to stop for one minute a day, and what to do when the urge to run hits. Choice and Creation in Weeks 4 and 5: doing less on purpose, starting a conversation you've been avoiding with a safe person, and calm that doesn't have to wait until everything is done.

  1. Week 1 · Awareness: Staying busy is a trauma response
  2. Week 2 · Regulation: How to rest without feeling guilty
  3. Week 3 · Regulation: What to do when the urge to run hits
  4. Week 4 · Choice: Having the hard conversation instead of avoiding it
  5. Week 5 · Creation: Feeling calm without having to earn it

Each week has a short teaching, one practice that starts in the body, journal prompts, and a few Do the Work steps. The teaching takes about ten minutes to read, and the practices take a minute or two. Fifteen minutes a day, at most. A new week opens every seven days, and you get to go at your own pace inside that. Every practice is an invitation, reading one without doing it is a full choice, and each one says how to stop.

What this is, and what it isn't

This is education and coaching practice, written by a registered nurse who has also been the patient. It isn't therapy, and it isn't a replacement for mental health care. It can sit alongside that care. It can't stand in for it.

If you're in crisis right now, you deserve live support rather than a course. In the US you can call or text 988, any hour.

If staying busy has started to harm your body, a doctor or a therapist comes first, and this can sit alongside.
