The Fight Response
For the people who snap at the people they love, and then feel terrible.
You took the quiz, and it told you your nervous system leads with fight. Maybe you winced when you read it. Maybe you keep telling yourself to stay calm and raise your voice anyway, a comment comes out harder than you meant it, your jaw is clenched before you've noticed you're angry, and afterward the guilt is enormous. A lot of people do this work with two kinds of pain at once: the original hurt, and the shame of how they learned to protect themselves from it. If you've ever been called too angry, too intense, too much, and then gone home and turned that same anger on yourself, this course was written for you.
What you walk away with
By the end of the five weeks, this is what the practices build toward. How much of it you notice tends to follow how often you did them, and any amount counts:
- You start to notice your jaw, shoulders, or chest tightening before the words you'll regret are out, which gives you a moment to choose what happens next.
- You've practiced a way to calm down fast when you're angry, one that starts with letting the energy out and takes about two minutes, so the anger has somewhere to go besides into you or at the person in front of you.
- You've practiced saying what you need in a steady voice, and taking a break from an argument and coming back to it, out loud, alone first and then with a safe person if you have one.
- You start to have hours where you're not on edge, and most weeks, somewhere you're actually safe, you take one of them on purpose, with nothing to defend and nothing to finish.
No promises about how fast, and nothing here needs to be forced. The practices are small enough to do on an ordinary day, and they can add up.
This isn't a flaw you're fixing
Fight isn't cruelty, and it isn't a character flaw. It's a trauma response, one your body chose because somewhere, at some point, being gentle wasn't safe. That was the right call at the time. The problem isn't that you learned it. The problem is that a body can keep bracing for a fight long after the danger has passed. If the danger hasn't passed for you, if home or someone in it still isn't safe, then that readiness is still protecting you, and nothing in this course asks you to change it around them.
You are not broken. You are patterned. And patterns can change.
What the five weeks hold
Awareness in Week 1: what the fight response is, where it usually comes from, and how it shows up now, including the quiet versions. Regulation in Weeks 2 and 3: a way to calm down fast when you're angry, and how to take a break from an argument and come back to it. Choice and Creation in Weeks 4 and 5: saying what you need in a steady voice, letting safe people closer, and learning to have hours where you're not on edge.
- Week 1 · Awareness: Your short fuse is a trauma response
- Week 2 · Regulation: How to calm down fast when you're angry
- Week 3 · Regulation: How to stop snapping in the moment
- Week 4 · Choice: Saying what you need without yelling
- Week 5 · Creation: Not being on edge all the time
Each week has a short teaching, one practice that starts in the body, journal prompts, and a few Do the Work steps. The teaching takes about ten minutes to read, and the practices take one to three minutes. Fifteen minutes a day, at most. A new week opens every seven days, and you get to go at your own pace inside that. Every practice is an invitation, reading one without doing it is a full choice, and each one says how to stop.
What this is, and what it isn't
This is education and coaching practice, written by a registered nurse who has also been the patient. It isn't therapy, and it isn't a replacement for mental health care. It can sit alongside that care. It can't stand in for it.
If you're in crisis right now, you deserve live support rather than a course. In the US you can call or text 988, any hour.
Start where you are
Short teaching, five practices, and a body that gets to learn something different. Lifetime access, so it waits for you if this month isn't the month.
